Superintendent's Notes

Chillicothe R-II School District
by Roger Barnes, Superintendent

Information on Inclement Weather “Two Hour Late Start”

The Chillicothe R-II School District has developed a “Two Hour Late Start” rule that may be used when inclement weather prohibits the start of school at normal time.  The intent of the Late Start would allow City, County, State road crews and Mother Nature to provide a safer drive to school for buses, student drivers, parents, and the educational staff.  It is important to note that the Late Start rule will not be utilized every time it snows, but only during a time when road and weather conditions are forecasted to improve.  Late Start days allow the District to observe an abbreviated day of operation without requiring a make-up day.  On Late Start days, school will begin promptly begin at 10:00 a.m.  And on Late Start days, students should not arrive at school before 9:30 a.m.

The protocol for Chillicothe R-II Schools when a Two Hour Late Start day is utilized will be:

1. Students who ride the bus will be picked up approximately 2 hours later than their normal time;

2. The same bus pick up locations will be used as during normal operation days;

3. The District will not serve breakfast on late start days;

4. Pre-School morning classes will be canceled, but afternoon Pre-School would operate as normal unless different notification is given;

5. When possible, notice to will be given the night before the Late Start day;

6. Various media will be utilized to notify parents and students of Late Start days.  Media utilized for notices are:  TextCaster Hornet Alerts; District Email; Local Radio Stations – KCHI, KMZU, KTTN, and KFMZ/KBZK; and TV Stations Channels 2, 4, 5, and 9;

7. The end of day release time will remain the same as a normal day.

Several schools in Missouri are now utilizing the Two Hour Late Start for inclement weather days.  Like many new ventures, as the District implements this new mode of operation, some adjustments may occur.  When this happens, information will be provided by Hornet Alerts, District Email, and when possible notes home to parents.  The District realizes this is a new venture, and the District appreciates your understanding and cooperation as we continue to strive to keep the planned educational days intact.

Educationally yours,

Roger Barnes
